Selena (Tina)'s Story
School
My biggest crush was a guy from a rival school across town. Mrs. Celestine Lewis hands down she was unforgetable. I am well rounded because of her, which came in handy in my professional life later on. Happiest memory would be when my crush kissed me. Funniest would be the manner in which I took revenge on a boy who was spreading rumors about me. Craziest was how he had to apologise in front of our classmates.
College
In the summer of 1983 I started at Columbia College..It was an amazing place so traditional and all female. Being the primary focus was both empowering and enriching for me.Leadership,'community mindedness',spiritual developement, and Cultural Arts were stressed then. I loved it all and got envolved in everything I could get into.(Judicial Council, Student Senate,Follies commitee, Ludy Bowl, Sophomore sister, Freshman Orientation..)The racial issues going on then I could have done without, but I considered it a challenge to make them question their ignorant uneducated beliefs. In 1988 I graduated,( only...Expand for more
one semester off schedule) and decieded to accept an offer by Benedict College's M.A.T.E. to get the courses necessary to teach. With M.A.T.E.'s help I went to Montgomery County, Maryland for awhile came back to South Carolina in the mid-90's taught in a montessouri school and later in Columbia public schools as an art teacher. During that time went to two more colleges Converse College (graduate seminar/ state program requirement) and Columbia College Graduate School ( coursework in divergent learning)At present, I am studying the law at Midlands Technical College to become a paralegal.
Workplace
I work in the area law for a criminal defense litigator. We handle state and federal cases. It's interesting work and I enjoy the constant challenge. It's interesting to me that I made full circle..Law was an area I was interested in before college. Well I've gotten to it now and is good.
Before this present career I taught in public and private school for number of years as a visual art teacher and chapter 1 instructional tutor.
